Lapidus & Myles Newsletter v.6
Blessings to All Y’all People of Conscience,
Since we last checked in (mid-August) it feels like the world has grown so dark and heavy. We want to acknowledge that for too many people, the possibility of light (both physical and spiritual), feels remote. And for all too many, the possibility of light is, in fact, no possibility at all. Do we really live in a world where the simple dignities and joys of being human are only available for those of us with some measure of privilege? Do we really live in a world where we actively deny one another the chance to live in the light, safe and free from harm? If so, the obligation to do good in this world, to practice peace and compassion, to seek justice… these are the obligations that come with whatever privilege we have and determine whether we have lived a good life.
People of Conscience have long understood that our blessings are squandered if we don’t strive to extend them to others and create a world that is more blessing than curse. For those of us that read the headlines or think primarily on a global scale, creating a world of blessing may feel daunting and perhaps unattainable. Hopefully we remember that every act of kindness, every step toward peace, every moment of genuine compassion, and a general commitment toward moral and ethical living DOES make a difference. We’re trying to live that truth to the best of our ability.
As per usual we’ll share some new content, recent goings on, upcoming engagements, and best ways to keep in touch. In case you don’t make it to the end, we’re putting some “keep in touch” info here: FB-- @WeAreLapidusAndMyles and IG: Lapidus&Myles. YouTube @lapidusmyles
ACTION ITEM
If you live in ATL please consider supporting the important work of the Community Assistance Center by purchasing a ticket for this benefit concert that we’re participating in on 11/10. It’s going to be great, and the CAC is a much needed ray of light and lifeline for many in the Sandy Springs community and beyond.
On Yom Kippur, Rabbi Daniel Gropper and Cantor Melanie Cooperman, the clergy team of the Community Synagogue of Rye, incorporated our song, “I Am”, into their Yom Kippur sermon and musical anthem. We were so inspired to know that this song resonated with them to such an extent. If you are seeking words of inspiration, you can view the sermon here. If any of our music has touched your heart (or even simply been stuck in your head) we’d love to hear about it. So, check in and let us know?
NEW CONTENT
In terms of new content, we’ll have major updates here as we return to the recording studio in October/ November. We’re excited to bring together a top notch team including our long time friend and beloved producer, Will Robertson (new website forthcoming, so no link) to produce some awesome recordings of some of our, as yet, unreleased material. We’re thinking about pressing a limited amount of vinyl for this record. If you think that’s a good idea, let us know? One song we’re excited to record is, “I Am.” This song seems to resonate. Here’s a video we did a few months ago in case you’re curious.
RECENT GOINGS ON AND LIFE LESSONS LEARNED
On 9/11 we partnered with Connecting Cultures for Peace (CCFP) for a Zoom Concert. 9/11 is a reminder that, unfortunately, evil is often more sensational than good. There’s plenty of good in this world, sometimes we just have to remember to see it, honor it, and pay it forward.
At the close of Rosh Hashanah we performed at one of Atlanta’s best BBQ spots: Wood’s Chapel BBQ. The weather and setting were so perfect that it was hard to feel anything other than wonderful. While the last couple of days have been a bit chillier than usual, we would all do well to remember to get outdoors, breath fresh air, and allow nature to soothe our souls. And of course… delicious food is always a good idea.
More recently we spent 23 meaningful hours in Cincinnati where we had the honor of providing music for a program entitled, “Good Troublemakers: Commemorating Cincinnati’s 1963 March for Freedom and Vote.” During that program we heard remarks from Rev. Otis Moss as well as Rabbi Jonathan Prinz. Rev. Moss organized the march, and Rabbi Prinz’s father spoke at the March on Washington. Their remarks as well as many others made a very strong impression. We could dedicate the entire newsletter to unpacking what was shared at this program, housed in Cincinnati’s historic Zion Baptist Church, but we’ll limit ourselves and quote Rev. Moss who suggested that we all offer the prayer, “May I be too courageous to hate, may I be too brave to be unkind.” Sometimes we wonder, rightly, whether thoughts and prayers have anything to offer or are simply empty words. With prayers like the one that Rev. Moss shared, we think the answer is clear.
With each and every engagement we are making new friends, finding new allies, gaining new insights, and better understanding our role in helping create and strengthen a movement of People of Conscience.
UPCOMING ENGAGEMENTS
11/3-5/23-- We will be artists in residence for a Shabbat retreat hosted by the Center for Small Town Jewish Life based on the campus of Colby College in Waterville, Maine. If you live in the area please come on out! If you know someone in the area send them our way! NOTE: We are heartbroken by the mass shooting that just took place in Maine. We hope that our visit can bring just a little light to this community.
11/7-- We were honored to accept an invitation to share our music at a J-Street End of Year Event honoring beloved Atlanta community leader Judith Taylor.
11/9/23--
1/12/24-- MLK Shabbat at The Temple. Join us as we sing along with the combined choirs of The Temple and Ebenezer Baptist Church at this annual highlight. You can likely anticipate an inspiring sermon from Rev. Dr. Raphael Warnock.
1/19-21/24-- We will be artists in residence at Temple B’nai Jeshurun in Short Hills, NJ. If you live in the area we’d love for you to join us. It’s our first foray into what we believe is the greater NY metro area.
1/26-28/24-- We will be artists in residence at Holy Blossom Temple in Toronto. It’s our first foray into the “True North” and our first international venture. We’d love to see you there.
